Writing the Names of Days

On your calendar there will not be room to write the whole name of each day. Here are the names of the days and the short way of writing each one.


Sunday Sun

Monday Mon

Tuesday Tues

Wednesday Wed

Thursday Thur

Friday Fri

Saturday Sat


How does the name of each day begin?

The short way of writing the name of a day is called the abbreviation. How does each abbreviation begin? What mark follows each abbreviation?

Here are some rules to remember


Begin the name of a day with a capital letter

Begin its abbreviation with a capitalletter

Put a period after the abbreviation


Practice Capital Letter

  1. Turn to page 33. Copy the names of the days. Beside each name, copy its abbreviation. When you finish , check your papper. Did you spell each word right? Did you use capital letters and periods correctly?
  2. Write the names of the months. When you finish, turn to page 14 and look at the name that you wrote. Did you speel it right? Did you begin it with a capital letter?
  3. Write two sentences. In one, tell your favorite month. In the other, tell your favorite day of the week. Your sentence maybe like these: 1. My favorite month is …?, 2. My favorite day is …?. Check each sentence that you have written.
  4. Write these names correctly. Remember the rules for writing initials. They are on page 32. Mr. c h dale     miss helen h kane     f s miller
  5. Study each of these sentences. See where capital letters and punctuation marks are used. see how each word is spelled. Write each sentence as your teacher reads it to you:1. My Birth day is next Thursday. 2) School began in September. 3) Is Bob birthday in July or August?. 4) George Washington was born in February. When you finish, check your work
